Small Change

Tom Waits conjures up the spirit of Louis Armstrong in his classic 1970s Club Crest style. Small Change is steeped in poetry, jazz and blues, perfect to throw back a few stiff ones and contemplate misfortune, love lost and days of auld lang syne.

Striking it Rich

Here is one my brother Jerry introduced me to in the late 70’s. Dan Hicks was truly unique, an exceptional performer, talented song writer and lyricist. His humor and distinctive style drew on folk, jazz and country and earned him a devoted cult following. Born in Little Rock, Hicks grew up in San Francisco’s Bay Area. For a short while he played drums for the Charlatans, one of the area’s first psychedelic bands, before changing to guitar and forming the acoustic group Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks in 1968. The Licks put out several great albums including Where’s the Money? Last Train to Hicksville and Striking it Rich. At the peak of his success, Hicks dissolved the band dropping out of the music scene for much of the next decade. He resurfaced in the mid 90’s with a new band, the Acoustic Warriors and in 2000 he reformed the Hot Licks releasing a new album, Beatin’ the Heat, which featured guests like Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones and Brian Setzer.

Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks continued to perform over the next 15 years. He passed away this past Saturday following a two year battle with cancer. For those of you unfamiliar with his work, you are in for a treat. Enjoy Striking it Rich.

We have lost another great one. Dan Hicks 1941-2016

Angus and Julia Stone

S

This Australian brother-and-sister duo has something that is very rare. They are both talented artists in their own rite. Bring them together with super-bearded producer Rick Rubin and it is beautiful. The album “Angus and Julia Stone” released in 2014 has it all, great harmonies with just the right amount of Aussie twang.

This has been my go to album of late, while taking some long hikes to a remote surf break that I usually surf just by myself. The next time you need a time out of your hectic life, take a long walk and listen these tracks and you might find some solitude and a bit of inspiration.

Track List

  1.  A Heartbreak
  2. My Word for It
  3. Grizzly Bear

First Aid Kit – Stay Gold

Stay Gold

An Americana indie folk band from Sweden? Yes. First Aid Kit, Sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg from Stockholm, Sweden are just that. Stay Gold just released in June is their fourth album and what an album it is.

According to an interview in Swedish TV webpage, the album is more about their own life than their previous ones. “That one has to learn appreciate what is and that all flows, that nothing stays”. That quote just nails it, at least for my own journey. This latest post is for my friends who are on their own journeys.

  1. “My Silver Lining”
  2. “Master Pretender”
  3. “Stay Gold”
  4. “Cedar Lane”
  5. “Shattered & Hollow”
  6. “The Bell”
  7. “Waitress Song”
  8. “Fleeting One”
