Small Change

Tom Waits conjures up the spirit of Louis Armstrong in his classic 1970s Club Crest style. Small Change is steeped in poetry, jazz and blues, perfect to throw back a few stiff ones and contemplate misfortune, love lost and days of auld lang syne.

Into The Labyrinth

A rare cool August morning. The last day of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Channeling MEB on this Sunday morning’s run as he goes for the gold in the marathon. Into The Labyrinth is the perfect musical accompaniment. To finish is to win. I urge you to hear it all the way through. Enjoy the stream!

Striking it Rich

Here is one my brother Jerry introduced me to in the late 70’s. Dan Hicks was truly unique, an exceptional performer, talented song writer and lyricist. His humor and distinctive style drew on folk, jazz and country and earned him a devoted cult following. Born in Little Rock, Hicks grew up in San Francisco’s Bay Area. For a short while he played drums for the Charlatans, one of the area’s first psychedelic bands, before changing to guitar and forming the acoustic group Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks in 1968. The Licks put out several great albums including Where’s the Money? Last Train to Hicksville and Striking it Rich. At the peak of his success, Hicks dissolved the band dropping out of the music scene for much of the next decade. He resurfaced in the mid 90’s with a new band, the Acoustic Warriors and in 2000 he reformed the Hot Licks releasing a new album, Beatin’ the Heat, which featured guests like Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones and Brian Setzer.

Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks continued to perform over the next 15 years. He passed away this past Saturday following a two year battle with cancer. For those of you unfamiliar with his work, you are in for a treat. Enjoy Striking it Rich.

We have lost another great one. Dan Hicks 1941-2016

Distressed Gentlefolk

This album is full of Hungarian Love songs by the Butcher.

I’ll be your breakfast, I’ll be your dinner
You won’t go hungry, You won’t get thinner
To see you starving is no damn good
So darling darling I’ll be your food.

Right!

What if there were Angles?

Angus and Julia Stone

S

This Australian brother-and-sister duo has something that is very rare. They are both talented artists in their own rite. Bring them together with super-bearded producer Rick Rubin and it is beautiful. The album “Angus and Julia Stone” released in 2014 has it all, great harmonies with just the right amount of Aussie twang.

This has been my go to album of late, while taking some long hikes to a remote surf break that I usually surf just by myself. The next time you need a time out of your hectic life, take a long walk and listen these tracks and you might find some solitude and a bit of inspiration.

Track List

  1.  A Heartbreak
  2. My Word for It
  3. Grizzly Bear
  4. Heart Beats Slow
  5. Wherever You Are
  6. Get Home
  7. Death Defying Acts
  8. Little Whiskey
  9. From the Stalls
  10. Other Things
  11. Please You
  12. Main Street
  13. Crash and Burn
  14. Do without
  15. All this Love

Enjoy your long walk with Angus and Julia.

Hotel California

Eagles-HC

Happy New Year, and welcome back to SoundTrax.mobi

We are looking forward (and backward) to a new year of movement and music. Here you can try out something new, or old, and we hope you will take some time to look around. We’re in it for The Long Run and there are some tasty sounds floating around here that we think you will really enjoy. Think of us as a music box, a theater of thought and sound, the last resort of LPs. There is a Carouselambra of records to choose from that “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave…”

Today’s Runner is the Eagles haunting parable of love, loss, time to kill and life in the fast lane. Hotel California is tiffany twisted and terminally pretty.
