The Endangered Song

Endangered Song

Portugal. The Man

I’m driving my truck down south on 101, meeting a client and listening to KCRW on radio. I’m pissed, busy trying to get another clients job out the door. I have to go to this meeting, knowing that all he wants is someone to have a beer with. Maybe we might have breakthrough on this venture and get this new product moving toward market.

Driving fast and being late, which I hate. My crappy radio is hissing, scratchy in and out of reception. A song starts playing I have no idea who it is, but it hits me like a beautiful bullet. I’m hoping that the DJ is going to tell who it is before I have to get out of my truck. Luckily, the DJ say’s Portugal something blah blah. I grab a pen, which is not working and scratch it on an old ATM receipt just to have a clue. My meeting goes great, major progress and a good Mexican beer to boot.

I get home and did a little research about mystery on the googles. I found out the real name of the band is “Portugal. The Man” and the song named “Endangered Song”. Released on 7″ vinyl only 400 copies, which is meant to degrade with each listen. This record will not last forever. The band encouraged the recipients of the album to rip it and post digitally to keep the song alive. Much like the Sumatran tiger a rare tiger subspecies that inhabits the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was classified as critically endangered in 2008 with a population of less than 400.

“Endangered Song (Sumatran Tiger)”

You don’t have to worry [x4]

When I was tall, I was the tallest man alive
When my daddy built a home inside
If it gets too cold, I’ll let you in
If it gets too cold, I’ll let you in

As I became a butterfly
That’s what the future’s like
All the reasons are clear

I wrapped myself in colored lights
For the blackest
Is the night that we fear

I was born in the warmest sunrise
Still colder than the winters of widows
When I found myself deep inside, yeah
Electric seas were the blankets that made up my bed

You don’t have to worry [x4]

As I became a butterfly
That’s what the future’s like
All the reasons are clear

I wrapped myself in colored lights
For the blackest
Is the night that we fear

There’s no living warmer
Where we run
And where we hide
Is where we find

There’s no leaving my child
We will run [x3]

I was small, like the smallest thing you could find
Where you cannot see is just where I will hide
If it gets too cold, I’ll let you in
If it gets too cold, I’ll let you in

As I became a butterfly
That’s what the future’s like
All the reasons are clear

I wrapped myself in colored lights
For the blackest
Is the night that we fear.
