Today’s Runner is a fine mid 70’s Champagne Jam by the ARS. “The world is in an uproar and I see no end in sight, but I’m not gonna let it bother me tonight.”

The Speed of Things

I was listening to KCRW a while back and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. came on the radio singing “If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t On The Dancefloor)” wow what a song! A great hook, cool melody and great lyrics. I thought “Beach Boy’sish” with something current and very cool. I encourage you to take this album out for a test drive, kick up the bass just a bit and see if these two Motor City guys can sell you their latest album “The Speed of things”. I’m sold. I’ll take one in gold!

If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t On The Dancefloor)

You’re supposed to surrender to the bass
You’re supposed to blend into this space
You’re supposed to stay just long enough to be felt
But you’re not there for the noise . . . the noise
You’re not scared of their voice it’s just noise
I swear if you didn’t see me you weren’t on the dancefloor

you should know by now
we’re just gonna keep on moving on
we’re just gonna keep on. . . on the dancefloor

you’re supposed to roll your hips in time
you’re supposed to see your age rewind
you’re supposed to pull me like the sun pulls the earth
but you’re not there for the noise . . . the noise
you’re not scared of their voice it’s just noise
i swear if you didn’t see me you weren’t on the dancefloor

you should know by now
we’re just gonna keep on moving on
we’re just gonna keep on. . . on the dancefloor

keep on
keep on movin on
keep on
keep on movin on
keep on
keep on movin on
keep on keep on
on the dancefloor

Woods Latest Album

This year has had some great new albums from bands that have been recording for a while. I’m going to write about this music for a while and get caught up on what has been dropping this year.

My new favorite that I just can’t keep off my music rotation is With Light and With Love by Woods just released. Jeremy Earl’s high, distinct voice is predisposed to melodies that quickly corkscrew their way into your brain.

With Light and With Love never makes much of a fuss about its aims. Earl’s lyrics are inquisitive in nature without giving you much to chew on, taking on the form of homilies about self-discovery and existential doubt.

But the versatility of Woods becomes more evident throughout the album, as they spread outwards rather than building upward: you get B3-infused soul (“Leaves Like Glass”), breezy psychedelia (“New Light”) and darker shades of American Beauty (“Shining”), giving jamband types, roots fans, folkies, indie kids and DIY fetishists a place to link up.

If I didn’t have Arcade Fire concert at The Santa Barbara County Bowl, I would be going to the WOODSIST FESTIVAL Big Sur.”

aja

SteelyDan-aja

In Today’s Runner, Becker and Fagen work the guitar, drums, and saxophone into a beautifully textured exotic island jewel. Aja from start to finish paints a portrait as lush as the sugar cane and coffee fields which spread across the western hills of Maui, and like the ocean, I could listen to it and run on and on forever…
