A Wizard a True Star

Today I wrapped up my thousand miles in 2013, finishing a week early. I brought along an old favorite. Todd Rundgren’s 1973 solo album A Wizard a True Star, is a post psychedelic pop record that borrows one part imagery from stage (Never Never Land) adds synthesizers and strange sound effects, together with melodies and several short cut pop songs to create a roller coaster tapestry unlike anything heard at the time. I love this record, even though it has what maybe the ugliest album cover of all times. Each time I listen to it I hear something new, which is to be expected on Rundgren albums, and I have listened to this one like a thousand times so I guess it’s an appropriate closer for the year.

A wizard clocks in at 56 minutes, and finishes with the anthem Just One Victory.

We’ve been praying for it all day,
Fighting for it all night,
Give us just one victory, it will be alright…
