Edge Of Allegiance

In the last half of the 80’s and the first half of the 90’s the Austin based duo Timbuk 3 put out a string of albums, each one as good or better than the previous. Today’s Runner is their 1989 album Edge Of Allegiance.

Pat and Barbra MacDonald weave together harmonies that remind me of Richard and Linda Thompson, with a measure of pop and funk injected in the scanty honky-tonk sound. Of course where the Thompson’s sang around the heart break of their slowly¬†disintegrating marriage, the MacDonald’s topic of choice centers around both personal and political¬†observations in well crafted songs like Standard White Jesus, Grand Old Party, and National Holiday. With cleaver razor sharp wit and well placed hooks and grooves, Timbuk 3 has created a catalog of really great records in a short 10 year period of time. I’m not sure what happened to them. By the end of the 90’s they just seemed to disappear.

Perfect for our current political dilemma, Today’s Runner is Timbuk 3’s Edge Of Allegiance. Enjoy!
