The Mirror Man Sessions


Don Vliet, aka Willie the Pimp, the voice of Frank Zappa’s 1969 jazz-rock masterpiece Hot Rats, was better known in the 70’s as Captain Beefheart. Vliet died last Friday at the age of 69. Painter, poet, musician, his style and raw bluesy sound which often focused on a beat or jagged riff accompanied by screams, shouts and howling vocals. Tom Waits fans will enjoy this forerunner, to his very unique sound variations.

Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band’s Mirror Man is a favorite with its almost 20 minute intro jam, Tarotplane. It was re-released in 1999 with 5 extra songs from the original 1970 sessions for an hour plus of solid foot pounding.
